US on-highway diesel average sets a record in EIA weekly series

The average rose US$0.686 in two weeks, from US$5.599 on August 31. The next EIA readings will show whether the level holds or the climb continues.
The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported that the national average price of on-highway diesel was US$6.285 a gallon as of September 14, 2026. The figure includes all taxes and is up US$0.318 from the week before and US$2.546 from a year earlier.
By the agency’s weekly retail series, which begins in March 1994, that is the highest reading recorded. The previous weekly reading, US$5.967 on September 7, had itself topped the earlier high of US$5.810 from the week of June 20, 2022.
Regional prices vary widely. EIA listed US$7.250 on the West Coast, US$8.039 in California and US$6.027 on the Gulf Coast, the lowest of its regions. The Midwest was at US$6.250. All figures are US prices in US dollars per US gallon, not Canadian pump prices.
The weekly rise of US$0.318 a gallon works out to about 5.3 US cents a mile for a truck getting 6 miles per gallon (an assumed figure, not an EIA one). This brief does not give a cause for the increase, because none appeared in the EIA data pages.
